Grown out of ♥ for people + planet

Hi 👋 I’m Ashley Irene, the Heirloom Potager.

Culinary Garden Designer + Soil Advocate

And I’m so glad you’ve come to visit my little potager garden in the city.

I am passionate about gardening and an advocate for the #growlocal movement. This site is designed to be a helpful guide to turn your outdoor space into a flourishing seasonal kitchen garden. My gardening style is a blend of form and function, inspired by the bountiful rustic gardens of Europe. Read how I’ve been training to be a gardener my whole life (and didn’t realize it!).

As a certified Garden Designer, I have a wealth of training to help clients create a garden that matches their style, experience, and #gardengoals. Most importantly, I believe everyone has the ability to cultivate their own potager, a space to grow nutritious seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs and (edible) flowers in one practical and beautiful place! Our team also has a love to of all things old and it’s why we love to grow heirloom plant varieties! For the taste, color, and diversity. I am fascinated by the rich and collective history of plants that our ancestors grew. There is something special about preserving history and passing on the knowledge, skills, and appreciation for gardening from one generation to the next, connecting our past and present with the future.

Heirloom Potager offers culinary garden design + edible landscapes, full-service installation, and maintenance to seasoned and aspiring gardeners in Orange County and Los Angeles, California. From container planting to full-yard transformations, we can help you create the kitchen garden of your dreams.

Hi 👋 I’m Matthew

Culinary Garden LEAD + NURSERY MANAGER + CHICKEN PRO

And I’m here to show you can have chickens in they city.

Matthew Harr grew up in Houston, Texas and learned about raising chickens and gardening at an early age through his grandparents. While majoring in Dance at Texas Tech University, he also studied Horticulture, and went on to get his Masters of Fine Arts in Dance from Sam Houston State University. After school, Matthew perused a career as an actor and dancer, performing in regional theater musicals and with the Pentatonix, Todrick Hall, and Jasmine Murray. Later, he moved to New York City and continued to garden from his balcony, while audition for regional theater and Broadway and supporting himself in the fine dining restaurant industry.

Matthew moved to Los Angeles in the summer of 2015 and has been gardening on the West Coast ever since. In the winter of 2019 he traveled to Australia for an immersive Permaculture course and returned home to develop a garden-based business. It was during the Covid-19 lockdowns in early 2020 that Matthew and Ashley Irene first met in a web-based garden business development course and the two bonded quickly over experiences gardening in Southern California. He joined the Heirloom Potager team in 2021 and is excited to share his garden knowledge with his SoCal community!
